Event – Conference – ‘Mental Health Today Wales 2009.’ 22 September 2009, Cardiff. This major Welsh exhibition is for the entire mental health sector – professionals and people who use services – from across the statutory and independent sectors. It is also a very relevant event if you wish to gain an understanding of mental health and are working in the areas of dual diagnosis, youth offending and substance misuse.

Event – Workshop – ‘Dignity is More Than Just a Word: Perceptive Professionals Embedding Dignity & Respect in a Care Environment.’ 11 November 2009, St Asaph and 13 November 2009 at Cardiff. The workshops are focused on fine tuning communication and listening skills to enrich relationships with patients/clients, relatives and carers (and colleagues).

Event – Conference – ‘Devolution and Divergence: Health and Social Care in the UK.’ 30 November – 1 December 2009, Cardiff. Over the decade since the introduction of devolution in the UK, the design, delivery and priorities for health and social care in the four countries of the Union are seemingly becoming increasingly divergent. This conference will examine the extent to which this is happening in reality and what the implications are for service delivery, professional practice, professional development and the education of future health and social care professionals.

Event – Call for Abstracts – ‘5th International Carers Conference.’ 9-11 July 2010, Leeds. Delegates are invited to submit abstracts for workshop presentations and poster contributions to be presented at the conference. The conference programme is organised around four themes, in each of which the primary focus will be on the perspectives, circumstances, roles, needs, rights and expectations of carers.

Funding – Call for Proposals – ‘NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme.’ A modern health service needs more than just the right buildings, equipment and staff. It has to base its clinical decisions on the most reliable evidence, optimising resources and ensuring the best care for patients. The National Institute for Health Research Health Technology Assessment (NIHR HTA) programme provides an assessment of the costs, effectiveness and broader impact of any method used by health professionals to promote health; prevent, diagnose or treat disease; or improve rehabilitation and long-term care. Research proposals are sought on several topics.

Resource – New Bulletin – The Older People’s Commission has published the first in a series of regular bulletins, designed to provide you with an update on their work and a sense of the issues that older people are bringing to the Commission.

Resource – Report — ‘Making the Connection’ The report has produced one of the most comprehensive pictures of the lifestyle, attitudes and experiences of volunteering for the 50+ age group in Northern Ireland. A mixed method approach using both a telephone survey (n=350) and six focus groups were used to investigate the under researched area of older people volunteering with both volunteers and non volunteers. The report concludes by outlining the practical implications of the findings on the selection and management of volunteers of this age group.

Resource – Network – Wellbeing Wales Network. The network aims to be the catalyst that makes Wales a world leader in achieving wellbeing. Part of the Network Strategy is to ‘explore the lived experience of policy in terms of wellbeing’ by establishing formal academic links and commissioning appropriate research.

Post Doc – Policy and Social Inclusion Officer, Mind Cymru. The aim of this role is to put mental health at the centre of NHS reform in Wales through lobbying on legislation and strategic policy, preparing briefings and responding to consultations on relevant policy issues.
