Mission

The main purpose of OPAN Cymru is to raise the profile of ageing and stroke research in Wales; to develop multi disciplinary research proposals and to link research with policy-making and practice.

OPAN Cymru is located in the Centre for Innovative Ageing.  The Centre includes members from other Schools at Swansea, who are already conducting ageing research (the Medical School, Insitute of Life Sciences and Business and Economics) as well as other groups where age related research is of growing importance (engineering, life sciences, geography).

OPAN Cymru is led by Professor Judith Phillips and Dr Susan Lambert of Swansea University. Swansea University leads OPAN Cymru developments around social care, health and nursing.

Professor Vanessa Burholt of Swansea University leads OPAN Cymru developments around social policy and participation of older people in research and policy analysis.

Dr Gill Windle leads OPAN's work in mental health and resilience in later life at Bangor University.

Dr Anthony Bayer, Dr Sinead O’Mahony and Dr Hamsaraj Shetty lead OPAN Cymru developments in geriatric medicine including physical and mental frailty and stroke.

OPAN Cymru includes other academics from Swansea, Bangor and Cardiff universities, health, housing and social care professionals and practitioners with a breadth of experience in public services and ageing who form OPAN Cymru’s Steering Group.

OPAN Cymru’s coordinator is Maria Cheshire-Allen. Mr Chris Marley is the part-time coordinator for the Stroke Research Group.
