Special Report CADR Conference 2016
27th October, 2016
The event was opened and chaired by Professor Vanessa Burholt, Director of CADR who told the audience of the unique position that CADR holds as the only research Centre to combine environmental, psycho-social, social policy and biological ageing research into one collaborative Centre hosted at Swansea University. Vaughan Gething, AM addressed delegates via video link, and said he was impressed by CADR's ambition to carry out research that really mattered and that has a real impact.
A series of speakers followed including Dr Kat Algar and Eeva-Maria Mutka who spoke about the CARtrefu programme that is delivering art programmes to residents in over 100 care homes in Wales. CADR researcher Kat Algar is carrying out the evaluation of the programme - the biggest of its kind in Wales. Findings so far are showing a significant positive impact on residents, staff, artist practitioners, and the wider community. Dr Deborah Morgan summarised her PhD qualitative findings from interviews with older people who described how chronic loneliness and social isolation amongst older people is associated with depression, loss of confidence and increased alcohol consumption. Professor Andrea Tales of Swansea University told delegates of the importance of collaborative working and engagement with the NHS and others, and encouraged delegates from all sectors and disciplines who have an interest in ageing and dementia research to come forward and get involved.
Over 440 tweet postings and 650,000 impressions were generated from the event, helping CADR to increase the reach of its work and stimulating lively discussion on the issues that it raises.
We would like to thank everyone involved in making this event a great success - the keynote speakers, the exhibitors, and everyone who came along as a delegate to learn and network. The filmed recordings of presentations are now available in our resources page.
