Forthcoming seminars/events

‘The Age Agenda in Aberystwyth – building collaborative research with older people on the challenges of ageing in the 21st century'

Monday, June 20 2011, International Politics Main Hall; Aberystwyth University.  10:30-15:30.

OPAN Cymru and Aberystwyth University have joined forces to host a one day event ‘The Age Agenda in Aberystwyth – Building collaboration research with older people on the challenges of ageing in the 21st century’.  The aim of the event is to bring together older people and their representatives, researchers, practitioners and policy makers to provide a forum for developing research ideas of relevance to older people and ageing issues in Wales.  Central to the research aims of both OPAN and Aberystwyth University is the inclusion of older people in shaping the research agenda for the users of those services needed by the older population.

Aberystwyth University is committed to engaging in high quality research that sets policy agendas within Wales, and to identifying opportunities for collaboration. In particular, emphasis is placed on the economic and social impact of research, specifically with regard to our ageing population. The Older People & Ageing Research & Development Network (OPAN Cymru) is funded by the National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NISCHR). OPAN is committed to improving the lives of older people in Wales through the integration of research, policy and practice. It facilitates collaborative research projects in order to raise the profile of research into ageing.

The one-day event is being held at Aberystwyth University, on Monday June 20 2011 in the International Politics Building on the Penglais Campus from 10:30 – 15:30

The day will begin with brief talks from senior members of Aberystwyth University and OPAN and by a representative from the Welsh Assembly Government. Following this session a cross section of current Aberystwyth University research into ageing will be presented followed by a question and answer session.  Following lunch, in the afternoon session, we will split into small groups and discuss potential areas for collaborative and multi-disciplinary research. We have asked you to indicate, in order of importance for you, what these key areas for future investigation might be.

Anticipated outcomes:

  • Opportunities for networking
  • Identification of research questions/themes and potential research groups
  • Identification of older people/participants willing to comment on future research proposals

Places are strictly limited, please complete the registration form to reserve your place.

This was the first joint Australia and UK virtual seminar for emerging researchers in ageing (supported by OPAN Cymru). (Emerging researchers include those who are students or recent graduates.) Prof Helen Bartlett (Monash University) and Prof Judith Phillips (Swansea University) talked about how to develop and maintain international collaborations in ageing research. The UK broadcast location was at Cardiff University. See link for details: www.wesc.ac.uk As you will see from the above flyer, Australia broadcasted from nine locations. Cardiff was the only UK broadcasting location for this event. In the future, broadcasting will be done from multiple UK sites.

"Turning Research Ideas Into Funded Studies: Building an OPAN Research and Development Group"

OPAN wished to support the creation of new Research and Development Groups (RDGs) in the field of ageing research. The purpose of RDGs was to generate research ideas and to turn them into fundable research projects. This seminar was of interest to anyone wishing to develop research proposals working in groups. OPAN members, university staff, students, colleagues from policy and practice, and lay researchers were all welcome to attend as this was an excellent networking opportunity to develop links with other active researchers.

The speakers at this seminar explained the process of setting up an RDG from scratch and discussed their achievements and pitfalls to be avoided.

Disasters and Older People Workshop II

26th September 2008 Environmental Centre Wales (Bangor)

Older People & Ageing Research & Development Network (OPAN)— Disasters and Older People Research Interest Group

This workshop was an excellent opportunity to learn about current local and international work regarding older people and emergencies–their particular vulnerabilities and how they can play an important role in preparing and supporting their communities when disaster strikes.

Guest speakers were followed by a workshop where all participants were invited to consider research options in this area and how best to take this important and emerging work forward.

This workshop, with a few different presentations, was a second opportunity forpeople who were unable to attend the first Disasters and Older People Workshop held at Swansea University.

Presentations from the event are here.

"Grandparent/grandchild Co-residence in the United States and England: An International Comparison"

Presented by: Dr Lindsey A. Baker NIA Postdoctoral Fellow

Andrus Gerontology Center, University of Southern California (USA)

Over the past 30 years, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number of children co-residing with grandparents, particularly in the absence of the middle-generation. Using the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) and the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), this research compares the experience of multigenerational co-residence in the United States and the United Kingdom among adults over age 50. Results suggest that extended household arrangements are more common in the U.S. as compared to the U.K. Structural factors affecting the co-residence of grandparents and grandchildren, including health/disability of the grandparent generation, presence of the middle generation, and characteristics of the grandchildren will be discussed.  The seminar presentation can be found here.

Growing Old in Wales: A Showcase of Ageing Research Mynd yn Hŷn yng Nghymru: Arddangosfa o Waith Ymchwil i Heneiddio

On 23rd July 2008, at The Guidhall in Swansea, OPAN Cymru and SPARC (Strategic Promotion of Ageing Research Capacity) hosted a free full-day conference that focused on ageing research in Wales and showcased a wide range of recently completed and current work from across the disciplines.

This special event highlighted current contributions being made by scientists in Wales to improve the well-being of older people living in Wales and beyond. It was an event which was designed to appeal to everyone - older people, carers, health professionals, social and housing services, those who work for charities and voluntary agencies, government, and many more including scientists from other fields not usually associated with ageing research. It presented work from a wide range of fields, including why cells age, vision in later life, improving urban environments in run-down areas, caring for people with long-term needs, ageing well, disability prevention, older people's use of unfamiliar space in their environments, and a lot more. Presentations can be found on the Documents page.
